Grass-fed Beef by the Quarter (approx. 100 lb)

Penn’s Corner CSA is teaming up with Greener Pastures CSA in Sligo, PA to offer you locally raised & grass-fed beef!  Now, you can purchase meat to add to the CSA produce that you’re already receiving from Penn’s Corner.  The all-natural beef is raised on a family farm without any hormones or chemicals.  The lean, tasty beef is 100% grass-fed on organic pastures.

What is beef by the quarter?

If you want to purchase meat in bulk, why not buy a quarter of beef?  A beef quarter allows you the freedom to choose how you want your meat butchered.  You will have the chance to custom order your cuts.  Please note, however, that you will have to pick up your meat at Hempler's Butcher Shop in Emlenton, PA 16373 in Venango County (or we can help you make delivery arrangements).  If you have already ordered a Beef CSA Share and would like to switch, just let us know.  We will be happy to help.

What does it cost?

The total cost of the Greener Pastures beef by the quarter is $2.75/lb hanging weight (which is the pre-butchered weight) plus approximately $.50/lb for butchering fees.  An average quarter is about 150 lbs hanging weight, which yields about 100 lbs of meat.  The final cost will not be determined until it is cut, prepared, and weighed at the butcher shop.  A downpayment of $60 per quarter of beef can be made directly to the farmer, Emanuel Schmucker, at 911 Henry Rd. Sligo, PA 16255 (please write this information down so you'll have it when you go to make your payment).  Write "beef by the quarter" on your check.  Once we receive your downpayment, we will be in touch to arrange your preferences and a pick up time.  The final payment will be due when you pick up your meat at the butcher shop.

Who is Greener Pastures CSA?

Greener Pastures CSA is a pair of family farms owned by Emanuel Schmucker and his brother, James.  Their farms are part of a small Amish community in Clarion County.  Emanuel raises Angus/Limousine cattle while teaching at the local school.  James raises pigs and milks cows, and their extended family grows organic vegetables (some of them end up in the Penn's Corner CSA).  They are very committed to natural growing practices, and although not currently certified, they follow organic growing principles.  They also go out of their way to improve their pastures and source top quality, local grains, when needed.  In fact, they plant to have their pastures certified as organic this season.
